1. Full Registration – available to:-

  • Graduates of Australian Physiotherapy schools recognised by the Board
    Qualifications acceptable for Registration
  • Holders of Final APC Certificate
  • Applicants under the Mutual Recognition (South Australia) Act 1993 who provide evidence of current registration in another state or territory
  • Applicants under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition (South Australia) Act 1999, who provide evidence of current registration in New Zealand

3. Student registration

Persons wishing to enrol in a course of study leading to a qualification recognised for registration on the register of physiotherapists must be registered as a physiotherapy student by the Board.

Section 28 of the Act states:-

  1. A person is not entitled to -
    1. undertake a course of study that provides qualifications for registration on the register of physiotherapists; or
    2. provide physiotherapy as part of a course of study related to physiotherapy being undertaken by the person in a place outside the State,

      unless the person is registered under this section as a physiotherapy student.
  2. A person is eligible for registration as a physiotherapy student on the physiotherapy student register if the person, on application to the Board, satisfies the Board that he or she -
    1. genuinely requires registration on that register -
      1. to enable the person to undertake a course of study that provides qualifications for registration on the register of physiotherapists; or
      2. to enable the person to provide physiotherapy as part of a course of study related to physiotherapy being undertaken by the person in a place outside the State; and
    2. is medically fit to provide physiotherapy of the kind authorised by registration on the physiotherapy student register; and
    3. is a fit and proper person to be registered on the physiotherapy student register."

An application for registration must be made in the proper manner and form and must be accompanied by all relevant documentation and forwarded to:

It should be noted that there is no fee payable when applying for registration as a physiotherapy student.

All registered students are urged to fully acquaint themselves with the Act and General Regulations and the Board's Code of Ethics.

The Board will provide written confirmation of student registration and your student registration number.  Please retain this confirmation for future reference.

Applications for registration under this category do not require Professional Indemnity Insurance.

Discontinuance of studies

In accordance with Section 63 of the Act there is an obligation to report to the Board the cessation of enrolment as a student on both the educational institution and the registered physiotherapy student.  Section 63 provides:-

  1. The person in charge of an educational institution must, if a physiotherapy student completes, or ceases to be enrolled in, a course of study at that institution providing qualifications for registration on the register of physiotherapists, cause written notice of that fact to be given to the Board.
    Maximum penalty: $5,000.
  2. A person registered on the physiotherapy student register who completes, or ceases to be enrolled in, the course of study that formed the basis for that registration must cause written notice of that fact to be given to the Board.
    Maximum penalty: $1,250.

4. Insurance requirements:

The Board can not provide advice on insurance policies and you are advised to seek your own professional advice in relation to your insurance requirements.

Unless exempted by the Board applicants for registration must be insured or indemnified against civil liabilities that might be incurred by the person in connection with the provision of physiotherapy as a physiotherapist.
